Ashlee Butler never imagined herself writing a book, but the antics of Myles, her nearly two-year-old dog, turned her into an author.
Her new children’s book, “Focus, Myles, Focus!” is Butler’s clever tribute to her spunky pup, a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, a breed few people have heard of.
“This breed is always happy. In fact, PBGVs have been nicknamed the ‘happy breed’ for their friendly and cheerful nature. Their tails are constantly wagging and they’re always happy to see you,” says Butler.
“Writing this book just sort of happened. Myles has more personality than any dog I’ve ever owned, and he’s always been a little mischievous. One day, I was out walking him and his older sister, Maggie, and Myles’ attention span was all over the place. On this particular walk, he attempted to eat a bumblebee and then proceeded to swallow what he thought were tiny pieces of chocolate, but in reality were bunny droppings. The next thing I knew, a gust of wind kicked up and sent autumn leaves swirling around us. Myles took off chasing them like he was the next contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’
“My mom happened to be with me on this walk and she heard me utter ‘Focus, Myles, focus!’ She immediately laughed and said I should write a children’s book about Myles and that should be the title.”
A couple of months later, Maggie passed away unexpectedly and Myles was lost without her. “Her passing got me thinking that there were still so many things she

could have taught Myles,” says Butler. “This book is not only about Myles’ adventures and his journey to find his focus; it’s also a way to honor Maggie’s memory.”
This delightful book’s stories about Myles are written in rhyme, which children will find engaging, along with adorable illustrations by the author herself! Here’s a sample:
Hmmm, Myles thought . . .
There’s a lot more to this being a good dog stuff
Than I was originally taught.
It’s time for me to focus
And decide which matters more . . .
Being there for my family,
Or having fun as I explore?
Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, Ashlee Butler is an animal lover who enjoys photographing wildlife. A second book, “Go, Myles, Go!” is planned for summer 2026 release.
