Today we are sad, and maybe even grumpy, about the loss of a 7-year-old cat who had become a worldwide sensation just by looking ticked off.
Grumpy Cat, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, passed away May 11 from complications of a urinary tract infection. She died in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha, the Arizona woman who's owned the critter since birth. “Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world — even when times were tough,” according to the family’s social media post.
Grumpy Cat’s permanent scowl spoke for people in their darkest moments. She was born April 4, 2012, and became an Internet celebrity when a photograph of her was posted on social news website Reddit by Bryan Bundesen, the brother of her owner Tabatha
Bundesen. Parodies created from the photograph went viral and she became the subject of popular Internet memes in which negative, cynical images are made from her photos.
