Silly Safaris' baby reindeer requires human care!

Meet a baby reindeer who needs some special care! Amazon John and Meerkat Mel, of Silly Safaris, are bottle-feeding a one-month-old male reindeer calf named Artemis after his mother was unable to produce milk, requiring human care.

Artemis was named after astronauts who returned to Earth the same weekend he was born. Reindeer are domesticated caribou, distinct from their wild North American counterparts.

Silly Safaris staff are also providing round-the-clock care, including assisting with basic newborn needs and bottle feeding. Amazon John says that bottle-raised reindeer often form strong bonds with caregivers and may seek interaction as adults. The educational organization currently cares for 15 reindeer and expects three additional births this year. It also offers seasonal “elves with deer” programs in December.

Take a look at this cute addition to the Silly Safaris family and watch Patty try her hand at bottle-feeding this baby boy!
