Grateful Rescue, a pet shelter in Muncie, Indiana, had to cancel its largest fundraising event after historic floods left Morrow’s Meadow, the park that hosts the event, under water. Grateful Rescue founder Pamela Terhune cited a surge in mosquitoes as a primary health concern for the animals.

Pet Friendly Services of Indiana, a 21-year-old financial assistance organization, provides critical spay and neuter services to thousands of animals.

Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as a singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. When a three-month-old Great Dane puppy started knocking over toddlers and terrorizing a blind senior dachshund in an Indiana household, the Messman family turned to Nathan Lowe for help. “People sometimes are hesitant to correct a little puppy,” Lowe said. “Well, a three-month-old Dane is a big puppy. And it was a very pushy puppy.” Lowe said the most common mistake new puppy owners make is believing that love alone is enough to shape a dog’s behavior.

“Pet Pals TV” host Patty Spitler was joined by News 8’s Kaitlyn Kendall and Camp Bow Wow Lawrence owners Mike and Kathy Underwood who discussed dog sports and pet activities. The Underwoods appeared with their three Shelties — Guinness, Bailey and Emily — and described rally as a relaxed team sport in which dogs and handlers follow a course together using posted signs.

A tiny rescue dog from Indiana proves that big things really do come in small packages. Bella, a 5-year-old Yorkshire Terrier from Red Key, Indiana, represented the Hoosier State in the national Pet Lover's Choice Awards photo competition. Bella’s journey began at Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary in Muncie, where Carolyn Pope adopted her two years ago. Although Pope wasn’t actively searching for another dog after losing her Chihuahua Annie, one look at Bella changed everything.

Dehoney-Hinkle says that the shelter is currently at capacity. She says that a big challenge right now is trying to get the animals in and out of the shelter as quickly as possible. One of her biggest goals for the year is decreasing the length of time that animals stay. One of the biggest ways to help the shelter, according to Dehoney-Hinkle, is to sign up to be a volunteer.

Meet Cookie, a female border collie mix who is around three years old. Grateful Rescue pulled her from a euthanasia list in hopes of finding her a forever home.
