Why your cat might be hiding under the bed — and what to do about it

If your cat has been spending more time hiding lately — under the bed, behind the couch, or tucked away in a closet — you might assume they’re just being shy. But as holistic veterinarian Dr. Randy Aronson shared with me on The Cat Conversation, that behavior could actually be your cat’s way of saying, “I’m not feeling safe… or well.”

After more than 40 years in veterinary practice, Dr. Randy has seen it all — and he’s passionate about helping cat parents look deeper. He explains that cats rarely “just” act aloof; their behavior almost always tells a story about their physical or emotional state. One of his biggest takeaways for cat parents? Focus on healthspan, not just lifespan. In other words, it’s not only about how long your cats live, but how well they live.

Here are a few things you can do right now to support your cat’s health and happiness:

🐱 Check their diet. Limit the dry kibble when you can. Look for canned, pouch, or freeze-dried foods with real meat and moisture to reduce inflammation and boost energy.

💧 Fresh, filtered water matters. Tap water often contains chlorine and other additives that can harm cats over time — filtered water helps keep kidneys and digestion strong.

💜 Notice small changes. If your cat hides more than usual, stops grooming, or seems “off,” it may be pain or stress — not attitude. A quick vet check or holistic consult can make a world of difference.

Dr. Randy’s compassionate approach reminds us that every meow, blink, or nap spot is communication. When we start listening, our cats thrive — and so do we.
