American Dog Whisperer shares training secrets

Pet Pals TV host Patty Spitler and WISH TV news anchor Pam Elliot were joined by The American Dog Whisperer, Nathan Lowe, to talk about training your dog and mistakes pet owners may be making in the process.

“One of the biggest things dogs do differently at home than they do at training is claiming behavior,” Lowe said. Lowe conducted a recent training with a Rottweiler where they worked on jumping, which Lowe says is how dogs “claim you.”

“Dogs claim by transferring scent on their pads to your pants. That’s why they leap, so they’ll mark you with a scent.” In the video, after the dog leaps on him, he “nips” the dog with the leash, informing the dog that it’s not OK to jump.
