Meet William Snakespeare, the python!

It’s Wild Wednesday, and Amazon John from Silly Safaris presented live snake specimens including William Snakespeare, a Burmese python, and an African egg-eating snake.

Pet Pals TV's Patty Spitler had fun holding the python, which slipped around her neck and squeezed her leg!

William Snakespeare is a half-grown Burmese python native to Southeast Asia, found in countries such as Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

The species has since become invasive in Florida’s Everglades. Burmese pythons rank among the largest snakes in the world; Guinness World Records note a reticulated python measuring 33 feet and weighing nearly 500 pounds.

Contrary to common misconceptions, snakes are neither slimy nor cold to the touch. Their scaly skin feels dry, and as cold-blooded reptiles, their body temperature aligns with their surroundings, meaning they won’t feel like a “snow cone” if the environment around them is warm.

Snakes also play a key role in controlling rodent populations. Common species such as rat snakes feed on mice and rats, helping manage pest numbers naturally.
