Remembering the K9 heroes on 9/11
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, search-and-rescue teams faced devastation on a scale few had ever experienced. Working beside the first responders were specially trained disaster dogs whose courage, focus and determination made them an essential part of the rescue and recovery efforts.
Kaiser was a search-and-rescue dog from Indiana Task Force One who deployed to the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks.
Pet Pals TV looks back at the remarkable service of those dogs through the memories of a search-and-rescue dog handler. Personal photographs, archival images and training demonstrations help tell the story of the animals that entered unstable and dangerous disaster sites to search through the wreckage.
Search-and-rescue work requires extensive preparation. The dogs must learn to move confidently across difficult terrain, ignore distractions and follow their training in noisy, unfamiliar surroundings. They rely on their extraordinary sense of smell to search areas that may be difficult or unsafe for people to reach. Their handlers must also learn to recognize subtle changes in a dog’s behavior that may signal an important discovery.
That training became especially meaningful after the attacks of September 11. Disaster dogs and their handlers worked long and exhausting hours in an environment filled with uncertainty and danger. Although the work was physically demanding, the dogs remained focused on the task they had been trained to perform. Their presence also brought moments of comfort and hope to first responders working amid the destruction.
