Tortoise is an educational embassador

Krissi Williams of Animal Care Alliance joined News 8’s Pam Elliot and “Pet Pals TV” host Patty Spitler to introduce a very special guest: Tortellini, a young Sulcata tortoise native to Africa, but being cared for here in Indiana.

Part of Animal Care Alliance's mission is to rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife. They also work with animals that cannot be returned to the wild, using them as educational ambassadors — exactly the role Tortellini has taken on.

Tortellini was relinquished to Animal Care Alliance by a family that could no longer care for it. Williams said she received Tortellini when the animal fit in the palm of her hand.

Sulcata tortoises are widely available at reptile shows and state fairs, which Williams said contributes to a common problem: people purchasing them without understanding the long-term commitment involved.

Williams says these tortoises aren’t a fit for most households, as they can live more than 100 years and grow to exceed 150 pounds.
